In a country like South Africa, where crime in general, and violent crime in particular, is so widespread, it is easy to lose sight of the personal experiences of individual citizens.
Nobody wants to be just another statistic.
Increasingly, the ANC government gives the impression that it does not consider violent crime to be a priority, or victims of violent crime have legitimate concerns.
Victims’ experiences are downplayed as insignificant; people who complain about violent crime are labeled ‘whingers’ and, for the last 12 years, the government has consistently failed to listen to a growing public outcry or to react to the problem with the necessary urgency.
The DA believes that the experience of every individual in South Africa is important and that no person’s story should be lost or downplayed, simply because of the extent of the problem.
By recording individual testimonies in a public forum, it becomes possible to give a voice to those people, to highlight their experiences and to bring their stories to government’s attention.
Tell us your story
We would like to invite you to tell us your story.
Simply click on the Submit Your Testimony button on the left and a form will appear. Fill in the relevant fields and tell us what happened to you, or those close to you. (Try to keep your submissions down to 500 words). Then click submit.
Your testimony will then be posted on our site, where other people can log on and read what happened to you.
At the end of each month, the DA will compile a dossier of all stories submitted to us and send them to the Minister of Safety and Security and the National Commissioner of Police.
Your story is important. We want to know what happened to you and we want to bring your concerns to the government’s attention.
Your experience should not be downplayed or overlooked and you are entitled to receive proper, efficient and effective service from the state.
The more stories that are posted, the greater the pressure on the government to take action.
Help us and other victims of crime to make a difference.
Tell us your story.
